Plate of Potstickers
I really like food and cooking in real life, so trying to model food sounded like a fun challenge. The goal was to keep the poly budget fairly low, but still practice working with realism in the shapes and textures which is much different than most of my more stylized work. As I was trying to work in realism, this project is the most that I have dabbled with shaders. I was trying to add a bit of translucence of the wrapper but still have the wet sheen of a steamed dumpling while also maintaining the normal map.
The dumplings were sculpted in ZBrush, then retopologized for a lower polycount using ZRemesher. I baked the dumpling normal map in Maya, and the plate, sauce, and green onions were all modeled in Maya as well. Textures for the dumplings were painted in Substance Painter, while the green onion texture and plate textures were hand painted in Photoshop. We have a lot of blue and white pattern plates at home, which I took as inspiration with a variation of a willow pattern to hand paint onto the plate texture.
